Divine has found herself shifting away from pin-up lately because it began to feel like a device for doing just that. “I used to have a vintage underwear assortment and while I still assume it’s lovely, it’s also very much about strapping your self in, putting a lot of constricting layers on and moulding your body into one thing else,” she says. “While that is tremendous attention-grabbing from a purely aesthetic point of view, it did begin to make me sad to feel like I was solely stunning if I did all this work.”

For the subsequent twenty years, Gibson’s fictional photographs were extraordinarily popular. There was merchandising of “saucers, ashtrays, tablecloths, pillow covers, chair covers, souvenir spoons, screens, fans, umbrella stands”, all bearing her picture. The artist noticed his creation as representing “thousands of American girls”. The Gibson Girl was tall and slender but with ample bosom, hips and backside; she had an exaggerated S-curve torso shape achieved by carrying a swan bill corset.
